English Language Learners (ELL)
Galesburg CUSD #205 is proud to serve our community's rich diversity of learners.
Our district currently provides English as a Second Language (ESL) services to over 175 students from 11 different languages. Students in grade PreK-12, identified through the W-APT/MODEL screener, as Limited English Proficient are provided with a sheltered English and ESL program model. The delivery model is push-in or pull-out involving small groups or one on one instruction based on a variety of factors including; proficiency level, level of academic and emotional development, age, group dynamics and home language.
Our Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) uses the E-ELD and WIDA standards to help design learning activity/lesson(s) specific to the expectations and needs of each student. All students are then tested annually using the state mandated ACCESS for ELLs assessment. ACCESS for ELLs is a English language proficiency test designed to measure English language learners' social and academic proficiency proficiency in English. It assesses social and instructional English as well as the language associated with language arts, mathematics, science and social studies within the school context across the four language domains.
